Ruffling through the Times in the wee hours, I was struck by the fact that we really do live in an era of Rogue Capitalism; which is to say, a time in history where fortunes are amassed primarily by the clever deployment of misrepresentation and fraud, with total conquest the ultimate goal. It's our predominant cultural ethos, really, and it helps to explain a lot about who we are---our economy, our politics, preferred modes of entertainment, etc.---and about the persons we choose to be our alpha-leaders: The Producers and Achievers who are equally Deeply Serious and incorrigibly corrupt.
