The attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi has become a political football in the presidential campaign, with all the grandstanding and misinformation that entails. But Fox News has raised some questions about the attack that deserve a clearer answer from the Obama administration.
Jesus. Why don't we just skip the formalities and proceed straight to the impeachment trial? Or maybe we should simply spell it out in a sequence that will answer David Ignatius' most probing questions:
1. There was an attack on one of our embassies in the Middle East.2. The Middle East is a politically unstable place where terrorist activity sometimes occurs.
3. Many inhabitants of the Middle East harbor anti-American sentiments.
4. Therefore, working at an American embassy in the Middle East is an inherently dangerous job.
5. One of the dangers of working at an American embassy there is the threat of being attacked by terrorists.
6. Not unexpectedly, American embassies in the Middle East get attacked by terrorists on occasion.
7. These attacks, while infrequent, are not unknown. There were a dozen of them in the last administration.
8. Americans deserve to know how these attacks were allowed to happen, too, don't you agree?
9. Then why haven't you asked the previous administration to explain its embassy security policies?
10. No, "Fox News doesn't care about those attacks" is not satisfactory to explain your lack of curiosity.
11. Likewise, "Fox News cares about this attack" is not satisfactory to explain your curiosity now.
12. What's more, no responsible journalist would ever base a column on a complaint issued by Fox News.
13. That's because no responsible journalist ever watches, listens, or pays attention in any way to any fucking thing that anyone at Fox News ever says, ever. This really isn't so difficult to understand.
But like I said, bring on the impeachment trial. Fox News will demand it, and as David Ignatius will surely remind us when it happens, it'll raise important issues that will deserve to be addressed.
