Tough choices indeed:

Carney said renewing the assault weapons ban “does remain a commitment” for the president.

But he said the immediate attention of the White House is on gathering facts about the shooting---not on disputes over gun laws.

“Today is not the day to . . . engage in the usual Washington policy debates,” he said. “I think that day will come, but today’s not that day, especially as we are awaiting more information about the situation.”
