Or we used to, at least: Primarily, to protect society from dangerous predators and to deter others from behaving in a predatory manner. But since our prison industry is now just another profit-driven enterprise that bases its business model on bulk incarcerations, our lawmakers place a higher priority on keeping the prison pipeline flowing with additional revenue-drivers (i.e., poor brown drug offenders) than on preventing society's most dangerous predators from, you know, preying on people.
Future historians will surely wonder why guillotines had not been erected in every public square by now.
