Is it just me, or are the Academy Awards the most boring three hours of TV you will ever see each year? It's funny because when I was young, I wouldn't have missed the show for anything. I mean, we hung on every "And the winner is . . . " with bated breath! Even for the people who won for sound editing and costume design and short subjects that we'd never see! Nowadays, however, I couldn't give a shit about the program. Part of my apathy/revulsion, I am guessing, is due in part to getting beyond a "winner/loser" mentality in my own life (I've been both, multiple times), and in part because of the inescapable corruptions of adulthood, i.e., learning how industry really works and how thoroughly markets are rigged after 30-plus years of toiling in the private sector. Hey, I actually used to think that Oscar winners were chosen solely on merit! The innocence of youth comes at a price after all.
