Sure, it's easy to blame the Kochs and the Waltons for destroying our planet---and they certainly are!---but we should all remember to take a good look in the mirror and ask "What can I do to minimize climate change?" For me, some of it has been forced by economics, e.g., I don't buy as many books or CDs as I used to, I ride public transit because I can't afford a car right now, etc. But some changes have been voluntary, like converting to a plant-based diet or cutting back the number of days I shave or wash my hair to conserve water and to reduce the amount of detergents I dump into the ocean. (I probably have more to atone for than most people since I used to fly a lot on business, and drove gas-hog company SUVs for years, so relying on mass transit and my own two feet to get around gives me a feeling of forgiveness from sin.) Granted, what you or I do will have little impact versus the consumptive demands of runaway capitalism, but if there's no preventing civilization from ultimate extinction, at least we can go out with a cleaner conscience. This concludes your Earth Day message for the day.
